Digging to America

Wednesday, December 20th, 2006

Digging to America by Anne Tyler is a beautiful study of culture adjustments between an American family and an Iranian immigrant family. It’s also an insight into adopting and nurturing an adopted child. It’s a family drama that each one of us will be able to relate to at least certain aspects of at least one character in this drama.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

I enjoyed reading “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn ” by Betty Smith. I lived in Brooklyn for three years. Hence I felt an instant connection and was attracted to this novel as soon as I read the title. What a courageous story! I think highly of the characters of Katie Nolan and Francie Nolan. Aunt Sissy was my favorite character as she made me laugh a lot.

The Namesake

Saturday, December 9th, 2006

The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri is an interesting story about a Bengali family immigrated to US. This story captured my interest particularly because I came to US because of marriage just like Ashima and I am from Calcutta. While Ashima made Halwa with Cream of Wheat, I have tried making Idli with Cream of Wheat (it comes out pretty good). However, there’s a generation gap between us and for that I am thankful. I am happy that it didn’t take me as long as Ashima to make America my home.

Life of Pi

“Life of PiLife of Pi” by Yann Martel is an unforgettable story of survival. I was impressed by the faith Pi had in God. He never had a doubt which is just too difficult during his adventure in the Pacific Ocean. He is a seeker indeed.

To Kill a Mocking Bird by Harper Lee is a classic indeed. I couldn’t put it down. It’s really fun to see from a child’s perspective.
