How Shri Mataji instilled confidence in me

Sunday, March 20th, 2011

In 1990s when Shri Mataji was visiting Calcutta, I was in Shri Mataji’s room. I cannot recall why I was in Shri Mataji’s room. Shri Mataji asked me to choose between two petticoats to match it with her sari in the light. I was so scared to touch Shri Mataji’s saris. I did a pranam to the sari in my heart. I believed I wouldn’t do it right as the shades of petticoats were too close. If Shri Mataji had trouble how can I do it? Just then one of the aunties entered the room and I thought I am saved. I asked auntie’s help but Shri Mataji said no and I should do it. I did as told to my best ability. Shri Mataji didn’t say anything, accepted it and wore it as chosen. I learnt my lesson: have confidence and take on the responsibility.

How Sahaja Yoga started in Kolkatta

Saturday, March 19th, 2011

Shri Mataji had forecasted that Sahaja Yoga will start in Calcutta through Mr. Jalan. This is how Her vision came true.

My father knew Shri Mataji through Rajesh Shah but I am not sure how devoted he was. Then, in 1984, my father was in Bombay. We lived in Calcutta. My grandparents were supposed to leave the town for a pilgrimage but my grandfather developed bad cough and the trip was postponed. My mother informed about this to my father over the telephone. At the same time, Shri Mataji was in Bombay as well. Shri Mataji sent a message that She wanted to see my father as soon as possible. He went to see Shri Mataji. There were more people there and so he just sat down. Shri Mataji didn’t speak to him at all. In the end, She asked him how is his father. My father was dumbfounded and said that he is all right. As soon as he could leave Shri Mataji’s place, he called my mother and she gave him the unfortunate news that my grandfather had passed away. Shri Mataji had called him and given him the strength to cope with this tragic event. (more…)

Equipping Kids with Stress Handling Tools for a Brighter Future

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

As a parent, it’s our job to see that our kids are equipped with all the necessary tools that they might need for a brighter future. For example, we need to make sure that our kids are educated. It helps if our kids have a dream so that we can help them and support them to pursue their dreams. We need to make sure that we train them with social etiquettes so that they have a pleasant personality.

However, everywhere in this world – school, college, work, relationships, home – they will face a certain degree of stress no matter what. Dealing with stress is the most important issue a human being faces and this is the most neglected area in the childhood.

To start with, here’s what I can try…

Teach my child to meditate – helps to revitalize the brain and get centered. Initially, when we sit for meditation we have lots of thoughts and it is very hard to be still. It’s easier to keep moving and thinking because then we are not with ourselves. We are terrified of being with ourselves. But eventually we learn that it’s nice to just enjoy our own company. Meditation is the only thing that can teach my kids to enjoy their own company. Hence, they are never lonely and have an attitude of “everything is all right”.

Give my child gift of spirituality – Feeling God’s love is the only thing that will not let us feel insecure and unloved. Hence, it’s important to teach kids how to pray. God is the supreme source of help, guidance and love.

Yoga/Exercise – Every kind of exercise and/or Yoga is not only good for health but is always a stress reliever. So, it helps if we can get kids in the habit of some kind of exercise every day just like brushing and saying prayers.

Controlling temper and emotions – go to a quiet place and just cry or be angry as much as you want. Once you feel you have calmed down, come back to the world. This can be a priceless habit! It’s important to learn that it’s not all right to explode like a bomb just because you are angry or emotional. Share your emotions and anger but in a civilized way.

All this is easier said than done, hence we need to keep trying …

Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India and IndonesiaEat, Pray, Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything Across Italy, India and Indonesia by Elizabeth Gilbert really motivated me to meditate more. I had a strong desire to go to a meditation camp where all I’ll do is cleanse myself and meditate. Then I will be ready to come back recharged to enjoy this beautiful world more thoroughly. In fact, we used to do that when Shri Mataji used to arrange a week of meditation seminar in Ganapatipule in India. I surely do miss that.

It was fascinating for me to read the “Pray” part of the book as Elizabeth Gilbert has iterated most of the knowledge of Sahaja Yoga. She did a great job explaining what Yoga is and also, she did an amazing job at dispelling the myth about Yoga. Anybody who is inquisitive about meditation must read this book.

3 Year old Preschool Curriculum for my son

Thursday, August 5th, 2010

My son is being home schooled right now. He is three and a half years old and his curriculum includes the following.

Reading Books: I love Sonlight P3/P4 curriculum as we are reading quality books and also, we do some of the suggested optional activities for each book in the reading list. We read Nursery Rhymes once a week. We participate in a book club once a week.

Activity Books: I have him working on 5-6 types of activity books at a time. I let my son do a page from each in a day. I like Kumon and BrainQuest Activity books. I have following types of activity books that he has been working on: dot-to-dot, mazes, tracing, cutting, folding, coloring, thinking skills, sticker books, and so on. We do these 3 days a week.

Reading Lesson: We are working with “Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons“. Teaching my son to read has been a cake-walk because of this book so far. The best part is that he is enjoying it thoroughly. (more…)
