Homeschool Days and Academy at Memphis Zoo

Friday, September 29th, 2017

Boys love the homeschool days and academy at Memphis zoo.  In September, they attended 5-day homeschool academy at Memphis zoo.  Each day was a 4-hour class.  They learned a lot about animals and made friends.  Each class included animal visits, tours of exhibits, chats with keepers, crafts and more.

Arjun and I have been studying animals at home.  For each of the animals we studied, he made a facts card.

In Memphis zoo, Arjun learned about 5 animal classifications and investigate how the different body coverings help each classification of animals to thrive.  At home, Arjun has been learning about animals in the science curriculum and so this fits perfectly with our 2nd grade science curriculum.

Kabir investigated how and why species become endangered and discovered what scientists, zoos and everyday people are doing to help conserve and protect them.  Kabir took his camera to the class and he took many photos.

They attended a homeschool day in October: They discovered how wildlife interacts with the majestic, and often dangerous Zambezi river.

They attended a homeschool day in November: Arjun dissected a starfish and Kabir dissected a water snake.

They plan to attend the next 5-day academy in January 2018.

Preschool Day Camp in Memphis Zoo

Friday, April 8th, 2011

This Monday, Kabir attended his first day camp (10am – 2pm) in Memphis Zoo. This is the first time he stayed with complete strangers and he was so excited and happy. He had a great time.

They read books, went to the Herpetarium, did coloring, sand-art and some science experiments. He was most excited about his lunch because I had packed him lunch in a brown paper bag. He said that he felt like papa as his papa gets brown paper bag lunch every day. Also, he was so excited to eat his lunch which had a big cookie and watch TV at the same time. He touched many small animals and bugs. They did a treasure hunt in the sand. He even took notes. He wrote down: “Too much fun, too much work. Went to the herpetarium.” He felt he was Jack from Magic Tree House when he took notes. He had taken a backpack like Jack. Also, it happened that there was a tornado warning when he was in the zoo. So, they were taken to the tornado shelter and they did coloring over there. He was excited about this too while I had been a bit worried about him.
