A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier by Ishmael Beah left such a robust impression on my mind. I couldn’t stop thinking about his life. I just can’t imagine being in his shoes. My heart cried out for boys like Ishmael. I wish I could help. All I can do is pray.
When I saw movies like “Black Hawk Down”, I just couldn’t understand how little boys can kill. Now, I know that it’s the effect of drugs and grief. Also, I could have never imagined that such boys are educated enough to read Shakespeare. This book has literally removed my ignorance on this issue. I am proud of UNICEF. It was so nice to know that such organizations are making such a big difference in the world. I wish I can help somehow in the near future in my own way.
Saints of Maharashtra (Bhavan’s book university) by Savitribai Khanolkar is a short and easy to read book. It has biography of saints of Maharashtra from 13th century to 17th century. It portrays how all the saints yearned for only one thing – Self Realization. All the saints knew that God is one and were beyond any caste, creed or so-called religion of Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Judaism and so on. Their religion was devotion and love for God. They saw God in all, true definition of a saint.
Miracles performed by Sant Tukaram and Sant Ramadasa fill the reader with amazement and respect. Lives of Janardana Swami and his disciple, Eknath portray how to fulfill daily responsibilities of a householder while being in meditation all the time. This is exactly what Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi has taught us. Shri Mataji has given us all the tools to attain the stage of Sant Eknath, we just need to do it, that’s all.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal (Harper Perennial P.S. Edition)" by Eric Schlosser. I was shocked to learn about the facts of the fast food industry.
The part that I will never forget is the dangers involved in a slaughter industry. I could have never imagined existence of anything like this in this age, especially in America. It is completely inhumane and outrageous. After reading this book, I have been to McDonald’s only for hot chocolate during winter.
The other interesting part was the story of Carl’s Jr. It was very fascinating.
Also, I had often wondered why it is so difficult to travel by train in United States. This book answered this question finally. It’s sad that the lobbying by motor companies during the early days have really sealed the fate of public transport in this country.
This is a book written by H.H. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi. I cherish this book because it has solutions to all the problems that we have created in this world.
There’s no doubt that humanity has progressed to a great extent in every possible way.
