Why Should We Meditate?

Imagine yourself as a person overloaded with work, scrambling to meet a deadline or else stuck in traffic. In such situations, your muscles tense, your breathing becomes shallow, you start to sweat, your heart races and your blood pressure rises. Most of the time we may not be able to fight or flee – the two most natural responses to stress – such as in the case of traffic jam. So we remain chronically tense. Unfortunately, it is next to impossible to live in 21st century and not ever be in a stressful situation.

According to the American Institute of Stress, nearly half of all American workers suffer from symptoms of burnout, a disabling reaction to stress on the job. Stress can adversely affect every part of our body and mind. Therefore it is really important for all of us to know how to calm down and increase our threshold for stress. One of the ways is Meditation! I have been meditating since I was 11 years old and it has made me a more balanced person than I would have ever been. Hence today I’m here to persuade each one of you that each one of you should meditate to keep yourselves healthy in mind and body. In order to convince you, I’m going to inform you about the nature of the problem of over-stressed life and how it can affect us and then show you that the solution is Meditation and lastly the advantages of Meditation. In God’s Name

In God’s Name is a children’s book. When I read it I felt that this is what adults need to read especially in today’s environment where religion has taken a center stage in politics and an individual’s life.

It reminded me of the following story. There are many ants around an elephant. As ants are so tiny in front of the elephant, none of them can see the elephant as a whole.
